Magnitude-6 quake jolts MM, Luzon

No comments :
A magnitude-6 earthquake shook several parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, early yesterday morning but authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at 3:32 a.m. with its epicenter traced at 30 kilometers southwest of San Antonio, Zambales. The tremor was felt at Intensity 5 in San Antonio, Botolan, Subic, San Felipe, San Narciso and Olongapo, all in Zambales. It was felt at Intensity 4 (moderately strong) in the cities of Pasig, Manila, Quezon, Makati, Parañaque, Malabon, Pasay and in the municipality of Pateros. The quake was felt also at Intensity 4 in San Mateo, Binangonan and Montalban, Rizal; Hagonoy and Obando, Bulacan; Dagupan City; Lingayen, Pangasinan; Indang and Kawit, Cavite; Bacolor, Angeles City and Clark, Pampanga; Mariveles, Bataan, and Pakil and Los Baños in Laguna. The tremor was felt at Intensity 3 (weak) in Tagaytay City; San Miguel, Tarlac; Baler, Aurora; Gapan, Nueva Ecija; Santa Barbara, Pangasinan. It was slightly felt at Intensity 2 in Baguio City, Batangas City and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. Solidum said aftershocks are expected from the quake. “No expected damage from this quake. Aftershocks are possible, most likely small events,” he said. Solidum said the quake was triggered by a movement along the Manila trench. “The earthquake was deep at 85 km so its source would be subduction along the Manila Trench,” he explained. He said large earthquakes (magnitude 7 or greater) had happened due to subduction along the Manila trench. The trench runs from the Batanes islands, curving through the waters off Pangasinan, Zambales and into Mindoro island. Solidum urged the public to be always prepared for strong earthquakes. “They should know what to do before, during and after strong earthquakes,” he said.

Suns' foam hands in honor of Gerald Green's amputated finger

No comments :
You’d be forgiven in forgetting that Phoenix Suns swingman Gerald Green is missing just over half of the ring finger on his right hand. The high-flyer doesn’t really advertise it, nor does he appear to enjoy talking about it, and it certainly doesn’t adversely affect the guy’s game. He can’t palm a ball with that hand, but that hasn’t stopped him from turning into one of the game’s most electrifying players – Green has also rounded out into an excellent shooter from both the three-point arc and free throw line. The Suns, it appears, have no such hesitation when it comes to celebrating Green’s unique handprint. As first noticed by Rodger Sherman at SB Nation, the team is going to hand out foam hands that line up perfectly with Gerald’s right mitt. Take a look: It should be mentioned, and I’m sure the comment section will take care of as much, that this design also somewhat resembles a rather X-rated hand gesture that far too many of us were caught making in college group photos in the late 1990s, but that’s just fine. Green, a free agent this summer, lost part of the finger after a (you guessed it) dunking accident during his youth. His per-game stats have gone down slightly this year with Phoenix’s addition of Isaiah Thomas to an already-crowded backcourt, but his efficiency has risen and he remains a stellar player that will have plenty of suitors during the offseason. He’s got his own foam finger tribute, as well, which is as cool as achievements come.

Kevin Garnett ejected after head-butting Dwight Howard in Rockets-Nets

1 comment :
Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard will likely both find their way into the Hall of Fame some day, but the big men's reputations could not be more different. The 38-year-old KG is known as one of the most intense athletes of his era, while Howard has often been criticized for lacking that special drive to compete with every fiber of his being. Those characterizations are exaggerations, but they still factor into considerations of both players. They're also a useful bit of context for the forthcoming video. Just a few minutes into Monday night's contest between the Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets at Barclays Center, Garnett and Howard got involved in a bit of a tussle that ended with serious consequences for one player. Garnett was called for a personal foul while defending an entry pass to Howard at the 7:53 mark of the first quarter.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Howard somewhat casually slapped at Garnett as he was walking away, after which Garnett retaliated by throwing the ball at his opponent's back and head-butting Howard after he turned around. Things continued to get heated: Howard showed a general lack of interest in escalating the fight and was dutifully restrained by referee David Guthrie, but Garnett worked his way through a restraining hug from Rockets wing Trevor Ariza and seemed interested in continuing a war of words (at least) with Howard. After a review, the officials opted to hand a technical foul to Howard and eject Garnett from the game entirely. We will have to wait to see if the NBA opts to suspend either player, although it's a safe bet that Garnett will earn a fine as an absolute minimum. The punishment makes sense given the actions on display in this video. While Howard struck the first physical blow in the altercation, Garnett clearly escalated matters and seemed much more interested in facing the Rockets center once everyone else attempted to separate the two. Old-school fans may quibble with the response from the referees, but this is one case in which they appear to have gotten things right.

Manny Pacquiao optimistic mega fight with Floyd Mayweather will happen

No comments :
Manny Pacquiao is confident his long-awaited showdown with Floyd Mayweather is on the verge of being confirmed, according to reports in his native Philippines. The fight, potentially the most lucrative in boxing history, is expected to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with a preferred date of Saturday, May 2. Negotiations between the two parties and their rival TV networks have been going on behind the scenes ever since Pacquiao’s onesided victory over Chris Algieri in Macau last November. Previous attempts to make the bout, going back to 2009, have collapsed over the split of purses, television coverage and how and when drug testing will be carried out in the build-up. However, according to a report in the Manila Standard, Pacquiao believes there has finally been a breakthrough. The newspaper quoted the 36-year-old Filipino as saying: “We will make an announcement before the end of the month. I think it will happen.” Mayweather, 37, has fought on the first Saturday in May for the past four years, always at the MGM Grand, near his Las Vegas home. Any agreement for the fight to take place must happen soon to allow sufficient time to promote it around the world. Pay-per-view fights are always accompanied by media tours, intense multi-platform advertising and even reality television. And with a Pacquiao/Mayweather showdown expected to break all records, nothing would be left to chance in maximising revenue. Meanwhile, Britain’s Amir Khan had hoped he would be in line to fight the unbeaten American following his impressive demolition of Devon Alexander last month. And with speculation mounting that Mayweather is close to agreeing the Pacquiao fight, Khan has set him a deadline so that he can push ahead with his own plans to fight in May. “It’s a waiting game, I’ve given his team five days. I need to know this week because I need to start training,” Khan told the Daily Mail. “I’ve answered all the things Mayweather wanted me to do. He wanted me to fight at welterweight, I did that; he wanted to do a vote, I won the vote; he wanted me to beat a top guy in the division and I gave Devon Alexander a beating he’d never had before. “There is a lot of money in a fight with me, not just in America, but he’s trying to avoid me. He’s avoiding two names in boxing, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan. “Mayweather wants to keep his ‘0’, he doesn’t want to take the big fights. He’s fighting guys who are over the hill or not at their peak.”
